Passion for LIFE

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy,
to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God -
this is your true and proper worship.  Do not conform to the pattern of this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
(Romans 12:1-2)

FAMILY

My greatest Passion for LIFE is my family!  Check out Evans Editorial, our new family blog to keep you all up to date with what is happening in our family.  Over the years of our ministry we have made several attempts at writing a “yearly” newsletter (often with several years gap between editions) to share the highlights of our year.  So, here is our latest endeavour to stay connected.  Our hope is that by posting regular on-line updates we will do better at sharing our lives with those who matter most to us.  Your love, support and encouragement is of great value to us, so feel free to comment and share in this on-line editorial of the Evans family.

  PHOTOGRAPHY

"For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature." (Romans 1:20 NLT)

I love to celebrate God and His amazing creation through the lens of my Canon EOS 300D & now my new 7D, capturing the beauty and brokenness of all that is around me.

As a keen cyclist I frequently ride through the Adelaide Hills and along the coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula which provide endless photographic opportunities.  In my role as a Salvation Army Officer (Minister) I've been privileged to travel and broaden my vision of people, places and possibilities of this awesome world!

Passion for LIFE journey...

SECRETS OF A BIGGEST LOSER

During the October school holidays in 2005 I began a life transforming journey after coming to the relisation that the way I was living my life was out of alignment with what I believed and taught about life and leadership.  As a Salvationist I've committed to a life of abstinence from alcohol and tobacco, however, I was abusing my body through an equally damaging lifestyle that resulted in being over-weight and unhealthy.  This led to a complete lifestyle change that had a profound impact on my physical, mental and spiritual well-being and the people I loved and led. Suddenly, my leadership gained a whole new level of credibility as people observed a realignment between what I taught and how I lived.  My journey has taught me many lessons about holistic living:

Personal Lessons & Motivations

Influence - The way I live my life has an impact on others
Integrity - There needs to be a consistency between what I believe and how I live
Irony - For me to gain, I was going to have to lose something

It is this final irony that I want to highlight, for it is a paradox that is strongly grounded in Scripture revealing the secrets of successful living.

“For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.”  Luke 9:24

Let’s first understand the context of this verse:
  • Jesus questions his disciples about who people think He is
  • Despite a variety of initial responses, Peter identifies Him as the Christ (Messiah)
  • After warning them to remain silent about this correct identification, Jesus confronts the disciples with the harsh reality of being the Messiah
  • He then relates this reality to what it means to be a follower of Jesus.
These clearly stated requirements of discipleship outlined by Luke begin to teach us the secret to experiencing real (full) life.  For it is only when we give up all for Christ that we are able to enter into a new level of living that is real life.

“For whoever wants to save his life will LOSE it, but whoever LOSES his life for me will save it.”  Luke 9:24

It seems to me that Christians can be very quick to bear the name of Christ, without really understanding the requirements of such a relationship.  This new way of life embraces the whole person – body, mind and spirit, fully devoting oneself wholly to the same purposes of Jesus.

This is what I believe is the secret to being a ‘biggest loser’ in a biblical context:

1.  Body“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore honour God with your body”  (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

2.  Mind“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will.”  (Romans 12:2)

3.  Spirit“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.  Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”  (Galatians 5:24-25)

I believe that our struggle to live a victorious or successful Christian life is because one or more of these three areas are out of alignment.

Jesus said very clearly:  “whoever loses his life for me will save it.”
